Born this way

So I was dicking around on the internet working this afternoon and I stumbled upon a video of a little girl covering Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”, singing and playing piano. All of a sudden, I was absurdly choked with emotion at this young woman (young woman of color, no less) belting out lyrics that describe perfection in perception and complete self-acceptance across genders, races and sexualities.

It occurred to me briefly that this little girl might grow up in a different world than the girls who lip-synched to Britney and Xtina, but the thought was fleeting as I remembered the staying power of other feminist role-models I identified with once upon a time (behold the rant if you missed it: Kat Von Fail) and I’m less optimistic.

Anyway, it turns out that this “little Monster”, 10-year-old Maria Aragon has made something of a name for herself with the video, attracting the attention of Lady Gaga herself who invited her up onstage last year in Toronto! As of this post, she’s made appearances on Ellen and Good Morning America. I’ll be paying attention now to see what path Gaga’s midas touch lays out for Maria in the sleazy strip joint that is show business. At any rate, I have no doubt Gaga’s intentions are pure: her emotion is palpable in this footage of the show. Enjoy!
